The type section of the Pond Creek Coal is at a depth of 125 feet in Consolidated Coal Company drill hole 91 (SW NE NE 21, 8S-3E).

Extent and thickness

The Pond Creek is more extensive than either the De Graff Coal or the Lake Creek Coal, which, respectively, lie just a few feet above and below the Pond Creek, but the Pond Creek is recognized only in southern Illinois.
