Named for Lake Creek Township, Williamson County (Cady, in Kosanke et al., 1960, p. 37).

Other names

It previously was informally called the Third Cutler Rider coal.

The type section of the Lake Creek Coal is at a depth of 86.6 feet in the Consolidated Coal Company drill hole 91 (SW NE NE 21, 8S-3E), located in Lake Creek Township.
