The Lake Creek Coal Member of the Modesto Formation (Cady, in Kosanke et al., 1960, p. 37).
Named for Lake Creek Township, Williamson County (Cady, in Kosanke et al., 1960, p. 37).
It previously was informally called the Third Cutler Rider coal.
The type section of the Lake Creek Coal is at a depth of 86.6 feet in the Consolidated Coal Company drill hole 91 (SW NE NE 21, 8S-3E), located in Lake Creek Township.
Extent and thickness
The coal is lenticular and occurs in southern Illinois.
