Stratigraphic relationships

The top of the Trivoli Sandstone Member is the Desmoinesian-Missourian Series boundary.

Extent and thickness

The Trivoli Sandstone is found both as a sheet facies generally less than 20 feet thick and as a channel facies that thickens to more than 80 feet, primarily at the expense of underlying strata (Andresen, 1961). The Trivoli is present throughout much of Illinois and marks one of the periods of major stream development during Pennsylvanian time in in Illinois.
