The Crane Member of the Mt. Simon Sandstone (Templeton, 1950, p. 154), the basal member, is named for Crane School, De Kalb County.
The type section of the Crane Member is the interval from 3105-3845 feet deep in Wyman No. 1 boring (NE NE SE 35, 41N-5E) (sample set 1301). It is located 4 miles north of the School for which it is named in De Kalb County.
Extent and Thickness
The Crane Member is 620-740 feet thick, and it has been differentiated in only a few wells in central northern Illinois.
It is relatively fine grained, but some of it is medium grained and a few small pebbles are present in places. The lower part is generally shaly, silty, and arkosic.
