Stratigraphic relationships
The interval from the Tarter Coal up to the Pope Creek Coal is usually only a few feet, and both coals are present in several outcrops.
Extent and thickness
The Tarter Coal is thin and discontinuous throughout its outcrop area in western Illinois (Wanless, 1957), attaining a maximum thickness of slightly over 1 foot in many scattered outcrops.
