Derivation
Named for Burroughs Branch, a tributary of Macoupin Creek, in Macoupin County.

Stratigraphic relationships
Its position is 14-17 feet above the Carlinville Limestone and 18 feet or less below the Macoupin Limestone.
Extent and thickness
The Burroughs is recognized in only a small area in west-central Illinois, where it ranges from a fraction of an inch to more than 5 feet thick.
Lithology
The Burroughs is a dark gray, sandy, clastic limestone.
