Name
Original description
Kosanke et al. (1960, p. 34–35) introduced the name “Shawneetown Coal Member” (of the Carbondale Formation) for the lower of two coals previously called No. 2A coal in southern Illinois.
Derivation
One of the oldest communities in Illinois, Shawneetown was founded in 1810 on the bank of the Ohio River in Gallatin County.
Other names
Harrison (1951, p. 15) used the name “No. 2A coal bed” for one or two thin layers of coal that occur between the No. 2 (Colchester) and No. 4 (Houchin Creek) Coal Members in Gallatin and White Counties, southern Illinois.
Type section
Type location
Core from Union Colliery Co. test hole #28, drilled in NW¼ SW¼ NW¼ sec. 23, T 9 S, R 9 E, Gallatin County, Illinois. Kosanke et al. (1960) designated coal at a depth of 543 ft 10 in. (165.8 m) to be the Shawneetown, but the depth is erroneous; coal at that depth is the Colchester. Coal 2 ft 2 in. (65 cm) thick in the depth interval from 482 ft 7 in. to 484 ft 9 in. (147.1 to 147.8 m) was probably intended to be the type Shawneetown.

Stratigraphic relationships
Jacobson et al. (1985) correlated the Shawneetown Coal with the Survant Coal Member of Indiana on the basis of physical characteristics, the tracing of beds through the subsurface, and the palynological analysis by Russel A. Peppers. Because the name Survant has priority of naming over Shawneetown, Jacobson et al. (1985) abandoned the latter name in favor of the former.
