Name Origin

The Popcorn Sandstone Bed in the base of the Shetlerville Member of the Renault Limestone (Swann, 1963, p. 32) is named for Popcorn Spring, 700 feet north of Popcorn Church in Lawrence County, Indiana (SE SE SW 5, 6N-2W), where it forms the base of the Paoli Formation.

Extent and Thickness

It occurs in Hardin County, but it is not widely recognized in Illinois.

Description

The Popcorn is a bed of sandstone, shale, or impure limestone a few inches or a few feet thick.
