Name Origin

The Lovell Member of the Mt. Simon Sandstone (Templeton, 1950, p. 155) which overlies the Kenyon Member, is named for Lovell School, De Kalb County.

Type Section

The type section of the Lovell Member is located three-fourths of a mile north of the school for which it is named in De Kalb County. It is the interval from 2850-2975 feet deep (sample set 1301) in the same boring as the Crane Member.

Extent and Thickness

The Lovell Member is 65-190 feet thick.

Description

It is largely fine- to medium-grained sandstone, although it ranges from very fine to very coarse. It is finer grained than the adjacent members.
