Original description

The Browning Sandstone has been attributed to W.V. Searight (1925–1927), but this was an unpublished manuscript. Wanless (1939, 1956) briefly mentioned the unit. The first proper descriptions, including measured sections, appear in Wanless (1957).

Derivation

The name refers to a village and township in Schuyler County, northwestern Illinois, where the sandstone fills channels eroded into strata beneath the underclay of the Colchester Coal.

Stratigraphic relationships

In this report, the Browning Sandstone has been determined to occupy the same stratigraphic position as the Coxville Sandstone, which was named earlier. The name Browning Sandstone is hereby abandoned on the basis of priority.
