Extent and thickness

The Bidwell Coal, although discontinuous, is more widespread than most of the coals in the lower part of the Spoon Formation in southern Illinois and is 4 feet thick in places, although generally thinner. It has been identified in only a few drill holes north of the outcrop belt. The Bidwell has not been recognized in western Illinois.
